Marking Written Answers
Mark written quiz answers from the marking queue, leave comments for learners, and finish their result.
Who marks written answers
Administrators, managers and HR managers or HR admins can mark. Learners never see the marking queue.
Plan: Business and above.
Finding attempts to mark
Open the LMS page and go to the Marking tab. The badge on the tab shows how many attempts are waiting. Each attempt shows:
- who took it, the course, and when they submitted
- how many choice questions were marked automatically, and the score before your marks
- the course's pass mark
If nothing is waiting, the tab says Nothing to mark.
Marking an attempt
For each written answer:
- Read the question and the Marking guide written by the course author.
- Read the learner's answer.
- Enter a Mark as a whole number from 0 up to the question's points.
- Add a Comment for the learner if it helps. They see it next to their answer.
When every answer has a mark, click Save marks. Every answer needs a mark before you can save.
What happens next
- The final score is worked out from the automatic marks and yours, weighted by each question's points.
- The attempt is recorded as passed or failed against the course pass mark.
- If it passes and every module is done, the enrolment is completed and a training record is added to the person's HCM profile.
- The learner is notified and sees their result, marks and comments in My Learning.
- If they failed, they can retake the quiz while they have attempts left and any waiting period has passed.
While an attempt is waiting to be marked, the learner can't start another one. That stops people retaking before they know how they did.
Writing a good marking guide
- List the points a full-mark answer covers, and how many marks each is worth.
- Note common wrong answers to watch for.
- Keep it short enough to read alongside the answer.
Set the marking guide when you add a Written answer (marked by a person) question. See Quizzes and Assessments.
