Quizzes and Assessments

Add choice and written-answer questions, set a pass mark, limit attempts, add a wait between retakes, and draw a random paper from a question bank.

What a quiz does

A quiz checks that someone understood the course, not just that they clicked through it. When a course has a quiz, passing it is required to complete the course, alongside finishing every module.

Plan: Business and above.

Adding questions

  1. Open the course on the LMS page and go to its Quiz section.
  2. Click Add question, then choose the Answer type:
    • One answer β€” pick the single correct option.
    • Several answers β€” the learner must tick every correct option, and only those.
    • True or false.
    • Written answer (marked by a person) β€” the learner types their answer and a trainer marks it. See Written answers and the marking queue.
  3. Write the question and set its Points (1 to 100). Questions worth more points count for more of the score.
  4. For choice questions, add the answers (use Add another answer for more) and mark the correct answer.
  5. Optionally add an Explanation. Learners see it next to the question once their answers are marked, so they learn why.
  6. Click Save question.

You can edit or delete questions at any time. Deleting a question doesn't change scores people have already achieved.

Quiz settings

Under the question list, set how the quiz behaves and click Save quiz settings. Leave a box blank for the default.

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Pass mark (%)The score needed to pass, from 1 to 10070%
Attempts allowedHow many times each person can take the quiz, from 1 to 100Unlimited
Wait between attempts (hours)How long someone must wait after an attempt before trying againNo wait
Questions per attemptDraw this many questions at random from the list for each attemptAll questions
Shuffle question orderShow the questions in a different order each attemptOff
Shuffle answer orderMix up the answers within each choice questionOff

With fewer questions per attempt than in the list, each attempt gets a different random set. That makes a question bank: write 30 questions, ask 10, and a retake is a genuinely new paper. The questions each person was given are saved with their attempt, so their result always matches the paper they sat.

Written answers and the marking queue

A written-answer question has a Marking guide instead of answer options. Describe what a good answer covers. Only markers see it; learners never do.

When someone submits a quiz that includes a written answer:

  1. The choice questions are marked straight away.
  2. The attempt shows as Awaiting marking to the learner and in the enrolment tables.
  3. It appears on the Marking tab of the LMS page. A badge on the tab shows how many are waiting.
  4. A marker reads each answer beside the marking guide, gives it a mark from 0 to the question's points, adds an optional comment, and clicks Save marks.
  5. The final score is worked out, the pass or fail is recorded, and the learner is notified. They see the mark and comment for each written answer in My Learning.

See Marking Written Answers for the marker's side in detail.

What the learner sees

In My Learning, the quiz appears after the modules. It tells the learner how many questions there are, the pass mark, how many attempts they have left, and any wait between attempts. They answer every question and click Submit answers.

  • Without written answers, the attempt is marked straight away, with the correct answers and explanations shown.
  • With written answers, they see Awaiting marking until a marker has finished.
  • If they don't pass, Retake quiz is offered while they have attempts left and any wait has passed. Their best marked score counts.

A retake isn't offered when:

ReasonWhat the learner is told
Last attempt still being markedThey can try again once it has been marked
No attempts leftAsk their training admin for another go
Waiting periodThe date and time they can try again

Earlier attempts are listed with their score, result and any marker comments.

Giving someone another go

When someone has used every attempt, a trainer can click Reset quiz attempts on their row in the enrolment table. Their earlier attempts stay on record, but no longer count towards the limit or the wait. See Assign and Track Training.

Seeing scores

The enrolment tables on the LMS page and in HCM β†’ Training & LMS have a Quiz column showing each person's best score, whether they passed, Awaiting marking, or Not taken.

For your IT team

  • Answers are graded on the server. The correct answers and marking guides are never sent to the learner's browser.
  • Every attempt is stored with the questions drawn, the answers, per-question marks, score, result, submission time and, for written answers, who marked it and when.
  • The attempt limit and waiting period are enforced on the server, not only in the page.
  • GET /lms/reviews lists attempts awaiting marking; POST /lms/attempts/:id/review saves the marks.
