What a BOM is

A bill of materials defines the components and quantities needed to build a product. Production orders consume the BOM to reserve stock and drive purchasing, keeping what you make aligned with what you hold.

Creating a BOM

1. Go to Production → Bills of Materials and click New BOM.
2. Pick the finished product this BOM builds.
3. Add each component with the quantity required per unit built.
4. Save.

How it is used

When a production order is raised against this product, the BOM is multiplied by the order quantity to work out what stock is needed. That drives reservation and, where there is a shortfall, purchasing.

Accuracy matters more than completeness

A BOM missing one cheap component stops a build just as effectively as one missing an expensive one. Walk a real build before signing off a new BOM.

Revising a BOM

Changing a BOM affects future production orders. Orders already raised keep the component list they were created with, so a mid-run change does not retrospectively alter what a completed build consumed.

Tip: Enter quantities per single unit, not per batch. The order quantity does the multiplication, and a BOM entered per-batch will over-reserve every time.
