Bills of Materials

A bill of materials (BOM) says what goes into a product, how it is made and what it should cost. Find them under Production → Bills of Materials.

Creating a BOM

1. Click New BOM and pick the item this makes from your stock items.
2. Set Makes (qty) — the batch the quantities below are for (usually 1) — and an optional yield loss % for the whole batch.
3. Add components, picked from your stock items, with a quantity, unit and scrap %. A component that is not linked to a stock item is not costed, planned or issued, so pick the item.
4. Add the routing — the operations that make the product, each at a work centre with a setup time and a run time per unit.
5. Optionally set a lead time in days. If you leave it blank, the item's lead time is used for planning.

Only one BOM per item is active. Activating one deactivates the others for that item.

Sub-assemblies

If a component has its own active BOM, it is a sub-assembly. The exploded structure shows every level, with stock on hand, unit cost and extended cost at each one. Click the arrows to open or close a level.

Standard cost

Each active BOM works out what one unit should cost:

• materials — each component at its item cost, through every level of sub-assembly, including scrap;
• labour — each operation's run time per unit plus its setup time spread over the batch, at the work centre's cost per hour.

The detail view compares the standard cost with the item's current cost. An admin can click Apply standard cost to set the item's cost to it. Stock is valued at the new cost from then on.

Versions

Click New version to copy a BOM as an inactive draft. Edit it, then make it active. Orders already created keep the materials and operations they started with, because each order takes a copy when it is created.

Where used

Where used lists every BOM that uses the item this BOM makes. A BOM that production orders have used cannot be deleted. Make it inactive instead.
