Device Groups

What device groups do

Organise devices into groups by client, site or role, then target scripts, patches and policies at a whole group at once. Groups keep bulk actions accurate and save you selecting devices by hand — which is where mistakes happen.

Creating a group

1. Go to RMM → Device Groups and click New Group.
2. Name it for what it contains — Acme — Servers, All Workstations.
3. Add the devices that belong to it.
4. Save.

Using groups

Scripts, patch policies and monitoring policies can all be targeted at a group. New devices added to the group inherit whatever is targeted at it, so a new machine is covered without anyone remembering to add it.

Before running anything against a group

Check the membership list first. A script run against the wrong group is the single most common way to cause a widespread outage from an RMM console. Groups make bulk actions easy, which cuts both ways.

Good group design

Group by role as well as by client. Targeting "all Windows servers" for a patch policy is safer and more maintainable than maintaining a per-client server list.

Tip: Test a script on a single device before running it against a group. There is no undo on a group action.
